Lyric Pages Up For "All Those Teeth"

Took long enough, but I've finally created all the lyrics pages for All Those Teeth. Check 'em out if you were curious what the hell I'm screaming in some of those tracks.

A New Album

posted Nov 26, 2018, 8:56 PM by oneclipleft

I've begun demo work on a new album of regular, normal rock music. Right now, I have 5 demos in various stages of writing which amounts to about 16 minutes of poorly wrought music. I think it's coming together well, and my writing process is drastically different from previous albums.

For one, I decided on song titles first. Locked in.

For two, I'm writing the music and lyrics at the same time for each track whereas I used to write all the music first, then come up with lyrics and ideas later on. This change has been refreshing and productive so far, and I'm excited to see what unusual results I get from this new approach.

I'm including more orchestra, piano, and other non-guitar instrumentation this time around, too. I think the added variety pushes me out of my comfort zone and creates sounds I wouldn't normally be capable of.

I'm experimenting with new vocal styles as well. This has been a huge challenge, as always. Partially because I'm not a very good singer, but also because attempting unfamiliar techniques comes with its own problems that are only solved through trial and error. I expect to need many more vocal takes than normal on this project, and that's okay with me.

It's an exciting time in OCL land. Peace!

All Those Teeth is out! Whoo! Party! (Then a Dark Turn into the Personal)

posted Aug 31, 2018, 10:52 AM by oneclipleft

It's always a fun day to release an album or any other major project. The culmination of a year+ worth of work hitting  home all at once is intoxicating. It's a good day. It's a celebration in your mind. YOU DID IT, YOU STUPID FUCKER! Well, that day was this past Sunday, and I didn't even make a post about it! I was too busy swimming in the high of a major project's release. Or maybe I was grading papers. Anyway.

You can listen to the whole thing on the youtubes for free 'cause I'm just generous like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwkyoMA5U9U
You can buy it (or not, I'm not your dad) and support my constant efforts at various retailers like iTunes or Amazon or whatever. Google it.

I must say that it's super weird to Google myself (not figuratively, you dirty people) and actually get results. It makes all the screaming, crooning, pretending-I'm-good-at-guitaring, mixing, mastering, writing, tomfoolery, whimsical expression, arbitrary quality control, turning digital knobs, clicking and typing numbers, losing sleep, metacognition, research, approaching death, and generally making an ass of myself in my living room all worthwhile.

Shit happens in a human's life while developing a long project like this, and it often gets melded into the final product. For AMPU, I began raising my oldest daughter, changed jobs, and hit some hard times. I was also growing dissatisfied with the state of the world, my house, my life, lost faith in humanity and America, and so on and so forth. So PROTEST ALBUM! FUCK ALL THINGS! KILL GOD WITH MUSIC?! Then I shifted focus. During (ab)Useful's development, I went saw the birth of my son, a divorce, a huge loss in my time with my kids, a huge financial fiasco (FUBAR), and came out the other end a changed man in a bad situation. During the writing and recording of All Those Teeth, I went though my mother's death, a new relationship, two different housing situations, a dive into game development/coding, the birth of my youngest daughter (being a dad is fucking cool, and I love it), and General Disarray for you South Park fans. So, life sucks, get a fucking helmet, if I may quote Dennis Leary (God I'm old).

So, make noise, enjoy yourselves and your lives, 'cause there's only one go at the thing. If you took the time to pay any attention to my creative output, then you've done more for me than I've done for you. I say from the bottom of my black, dead, still-beating heart: Thank you. Just, thank you.

Peace,
-OCL

It's Been A Minute

Woah! I hadn't realized how long it's been since my last update. Sorry about that! Here goes!

I appreciate you guys coming out of the woodwork with me to check out what I've been up to. If you're behind, it's fairly straightforward:
  1. New album singles are coming out ahead of the new record's official release.
  2. Started a new show called Retro Rant dedicated to playing 20 year old games and ranting about shit.
  3. Still working on the podcast with another fine gentleman about philosophy and society and different kinds of whatnot.
  4. I'm late beginning on my next game development. I have no excuse for this.
Most recently, though, you can check out my Retro Rant about the recent immigrant children crisis, human rights, and space force (as I blunder through Rayman 2: The Great Escape). Also, the first new single from my upcoming album is primed for listening as well. Here's some links:

First new single "Fenrir" (with lyrics): https://youtu.be/dJRz87B8aM4

The next new single comes out on the 30th, and I'm crazy excited to share it. Might even land a day early? Probably will.

Anyway, I still have a ton of new content to create and share this year, so sike and lubscribe! Peace!

New Song "Fenrir" IS TOTALLY OUT NOW! WHOO!

posted Jun 8, 2018, 9:58 PM by oneclipleft

Very excited about this one! It's one of the softer songs on the album, and the most radio-friendly, but it's a good song, man. I think you'll like it. Anyway, check it out and leave some of them precious comments!

First New Single "Fenrir" Out Tomorrow, June 9th!

posted Jun 8, 2018, 10:02 AM by oneclipleft

Here's where I start to get excited. Releasing new music is always fun for me, even the times when the critical response is less-than-stellar. I'm always interested in people's honest feedback and reactions to my work, though, so keep an eye out tomorrow for the release and give a comment!

In other news, I've started releasing these unusual Let's Plays where I jam on an old N64 game for awhile and talk about whatever random topic I have that day. They're fun and easy to make (and hopefully entertaining on some level), so I plan to continue those videos for awhile. Not sure how long, though. I'll have to turn my attention back to my podcast project at some point.

That's it for now, peace!

First Single Coming June 9th!

posted May 27, 2018, 3:47 PM by oneclipleft

Hey!

I have a few singles to release prior to the album's release on August 26th, and the first one is coming June 9th! I suppose I should say something about what All Those Teeth is about, right? Well, unlike previous records, none of these songs are personal to me. It could be called a concept record. The theme is horrifying mythical creatures from a variety of world cultures (but one of the creatures is very much real). I tried to capture the legend surrounding each creature accurately in the lyrics and music, and I think it all comes together pretty well. Each song is named after the creature its about, so feel free to research those entities and tell me where I got things wrong!

The album will have 9 songs, so it's a bit more focused than my last two (A More Perfect Union and (ab)Useful). The runtime is 59:25, so it's also shorter than the previous records by quite a bit. I tried to cut all the fat from this one. All killer, no filler. I ordered the songs from heaviest/fastest first to lighter/slower later. The last song is particularly soft/haunting since it features no guitars whatsoever. Consider that one a subversion of pop, if you like.

All Those Teeth also stretches my vocal abilities to their current limit (all of my albums do this, for better or worse, and I often attempt to exceed my abilities with questionable results). The result this time is pretty diverse and interesting. I feel like I can honestly say that I've achieved the vocal ability and quality that I've always been searching for. I'm happy to say that I hit nearly 4 octaves in that last song vocally. I'm really proud of that one (it'll probably come out as a single).

So, that's the state of affairs regarding All Those Teeth. It'll have a page up on this site soon, with track names, lengths, and lyrics as usual.

Enjoy,
-OCL

Not Music Related but...

Skyrim Adventures Machinima Short is OUT! Take a look, have a laugh. I did the music for it (among other things like writing and voice acting), so I guess it kinda belongs here? Who knows! The OCL machine is moving again!
